UGM Students Receive 740 Candidates from SNMPTN

As many as 740 prospective new students of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will be received through the National Selection Log In Universities Affairs (SNMPTN) 2009. SNMPTN announcement will be made simultaneously on Saturday 1 August 2009.

“What is received through SNMPTN about 740 prospective students. Currently, the number of applicants also increased about 3 thousand people,” said Chairman of the Local Committee SNMPTN DIY, Budi Prasetyo on campus UGM, Yogyakarta in Bulaksumur, Friday (31/7/2009).

Asiaweek: Best Universities

The third Asiaweek annual survey of Asia’s top universities is a refinement of previous versions and offers separate rankings of multidisciplinary schools and science and technology schools. Seventy-nine multidisciplinary universities are ranked, led by Tohuku University, and thirty-five science and technology schools are listed, topped by the Korea Advanced Institute for Science and Technology. All of the schools are judged by five criteria; academic reputation, student selectivity, faculty resources, research output, and financial resources.

More students enter universities through special schemes

Students from poor families will likely find it increasingly difficult to enter state-owned universities in the coming years, as the number of seats offered through special entrance schemes, which require higher admission fees, are steadily increasing.

The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), for example, will offer 1,140 of its total 2,985 seats (or 38 percent) to students who pass a special entrance test this academic year. As of 2004, just 13-20 percent of seats were made available through this scheme.
