This morning we were named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in the world for Big Data.
This is a remarkable achievement for a company our size and age and we are both flattered and humbled at our inclusion alongside such innovators as Apple, Google, Netflix, Tesla Motors, and 2015 Winner Warby Parker.
Gunnar, Harlan and I started Ayasdi in 2008 with a very strong foundation but we knew that bringing our technology to market would require significant effort. Topological Data Analysis was and remains, a revolutionary framework for an increasingly complex world. TDA’s ability to find patterns and relationships that are obscured by complexity is unparalleled. Still, it was TDA’s capacity to make machines learn more effectively that underpinned our confidence.
In 2008, even our “youthful” optimism would not have predicted the success we have enjoyed to date.
We have obviously enjoyed commercial success with our products, but being academics we always wanted to support cutting-edge research with our products. I am proud to see the extraordinary number of papers that get published, or the exceptional breakthroughs in medical science discovered using our software.
Reflecting on this journey in light of the Fast Company recognition made us think about the two key elements that have led us here: a commitment to innovation and a commitment to hiring the very best.
While they seem unrelated at first, they are very much intertwined. Our commitment to innovation attracts a certain type of entrepreneur. Our commitment to hiring a certain type of person ensures we remain innovative.
Fortune magazine captured our philosophy earlier this year:
“The people who come to work for a startup are adventurous. They want to take risks. Putting creative people in uncharted territory is pretty much the best thing you can do for them.”
We work hard to create an environment suited for innovators and to attract the talent that flourishes in that environment. The rewards of our approach come in many ways – including making such a prestigious list such Fast Company’s, AlwaysOn’s or Inc’s.
This the second year that Fast Company has recognized us as an innovator in Big Data. While we certainly want to take a moment to bask in the limelight – it is in our DNA to get back to work and change the world.
