As many as 740 prospective new students of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will be received through the National Selection Log In Universities Affairs (SNMPTN) 2009. SNMPTN announcement will be made simultaneously on Saturday 1 August 2009.

“What is received through SNMPTN about 740 prospective students. Currently, the number of applicants also increased about 3 thousand people,” said Chairman of the Local Committee SNMPTN DIY, Budi Prasetyo on campus UGM, Yogyakarta in Bulaksumur, Friday (31/7/2009).

According to Budi the total number of prospective students who register in the special UGM has increased from 13 years ago from thousands of applicants to about 16 thousand applicants. Meanwhile, for the department that is still a priority and prospective students are still the same compared to previous years as in the Faculty of Medicine. “Medical and techniques remain the most favorite and high,” said Budi.

In addition to the increased number of applicants he said, prospective students’ capacity to be received in each faculty also increased. If years ago UGM only receive about 300 prospective students, so this year to be 740 people or up 100 percent.

When asked the total number of prospective students who received three PTN in the UGM, UNY and UIN Sunan Kalijaga through SNMPTN. Budi said approximately 3,800 candidates received through these channels. “Total in 3800 approximately 3 PTN matriculant UNY and still the most,” he said.

He added both prospective students through the reception line or SNMPTN Write a Test (Utul) conducted in a transparent and all are charged or not free. Number of Donations for Academic Quality (SPMA) at the UTUL this year does not have a zero dollar. But for those who can not afford to submit to receive a scholarship provided.

“For scholars and for the relief that is not capable, we have already set up,” Budi pungkas.

Students from poor families will likely find it increasingly difficult to enter state-owned universities in the coming years, as the number of seats offered through special entrance schemes, which require higher admission fees, are steadily increasing.

The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), for example, will offer 1,140 of its total 2,985 seats (or 38 percent) to students who pass a special entrance test this academic year. As of 2004, just 13-20 percent of seats were made available through this scheme.

Padjadjaran University (Unpad), also in Bandung, offers 3,795 of its 10,000 seats (also roughly 38 percent) through a special scheme. Previously, less than 30 percent of total seats were made available through the scheme.

The Bandung based Indonesian Education University (UPI) even makes some 80 percent, or 3,500 of its total 4,205 seats, available through special entrance mechanisms including a special test and a special skill and interest trail scheme. This represents a marked rise form 40 percent it offered in 2007 and the 38 percent it offered last year.

Asep Gana Suganda, secretary of the local committee of the 2009 university entrance tests (SNMPTN) said the committee only printed 28,000 application forms because of the increasing trend of students choosing to take special entrance tests over the national SNMPTN test.

Asep said the number of senior high school graduates taking regular university entrance tests continues to decrease.

Over 55,000 students took the regular tests in 2001, but just 28,000 took it last year, even though the committee had prepared 30,500 application forms.

“Now we print fewer application forms to prevent us from experiencing the same financial losses we incurred last year,” Asep told a press conference earlier this week.

Vice Rector of ITB Adang Surachman, who oversees academic affairs, said that the high admission fees applied to the special entrance test scheme did not seem to influence applicants’ preference for the special test over the regular one.

“The number of students enrolling through the special tests continues to increase,” Adang said.

He said 7,850 students enrolled for the special entrance test scheme this year, a significant increase from 6,500 last year. A minimum admission fee of Rp 55 million is required – no upper limit is set.

Yet, Adang added, ITB was acting within the law on higher education, which allows higher education institutions to raise 33 percent of their total operational costs from students; in ITB’s case the total operational cost is Rp 600 billion.

Weny Widowati of Unpad told a similar story, saying her university had been receiving more students through special entrance tests, which Unpad itself prepares and conducts.

Weny said Unpad requires an admission fee of Rp 10 million at the minimum for the schools of literature and husbandry and Rp 175 million at the minimum for the school of medicine.

“We indeed have a huge number of applicants for the special entrance tests but we try our best not to violate the law,” Weny said.

Adang, who is also a member of the SNMPTN committee, meanwhile said that starting this year the national entrance test, scheduled for July 1 and 2, will require applicants to undergo an academic potential test which will contribute up to 30 percent of the total score of the admission test.

He said the test would be applied because experience shows that many students are only good at answering test questions in order to pass an exam but in fact lack motivation to study and end up dropping out of school.

“That’s why we offer a special entrance test scheme through a psychological test so we can see how determined an applicant is to study or whether he/she is good only at answering test questions,” Adang said.

Adang added that the drop out rate of students accepted through special test schemes was around three percent in the first year and was almost zero afterward. The attrition rate of students admitted through regular tests, however, is around two percent annually or 10 percent by the end of the study period.

“It’s because those selected through the special scheme are really those who, psychologically, have a high level of motivation to learn,” Adang said.

How the assessment Selection Log In Universities National Affairs (SNMPTN) changed in 2009. If using a system previously SNMPTN Answer all subjects tested, now is a ranking system to each subject. ”If the first is the subject continues to be divided evenly note, the values that come in,’’said the guarantor Quality SNMPTN, DR. Adang Surahman in a press conference in Jakarta, Monday (1 / 6).

System such as this, he said, has a shortage, some of them ignore the subject. For example, prospective students who have only deepens language regardless of Mathematics. So, while small value of mathematics, not a problem because the child can closed by the Indonesian language. Hence it is often the case there is any entrance way, the child is actually clever Biology he go to Physics.

Began in 2009, said he, the assessment changed. Each eye exam will be assessed based on the ranking scale with zero up to a hundred before the value note. Or in accordance with the mathematical formula 100x (1-ranking: number of participants). Each’’subjects specified rank each. For example, the subjects Mathematics, rank 1 is the A so also with other subjects,”he said.

In this way, every eye exam should be done as soon as possible and not have to be ignored. Assessment of the exam itself is still using the old provisions. Ie, correct answers were given four values, wrong answers are given the value of minus one and not zero rated.

Appropriate name, the system is intended to select prospective students. Ie students who have been able to follow all subjects. Because there are a few cases, students are proficient in the technique but he is reluctant to learn Pancasila. This can make students drop out to the cliff. “This system can be considered to reduce the future number DO (Drop Out),” he explains. Mathematics for the eye exam, this year there is a reduction in credit from five to four. Namely Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Removed the eye exam is an integrated science.

Executive Secretary Local Committee SNMPTN 2009 Bandung, Asep Gana Suganda, said the number of forms SNMPTN this year decreased compared to previous years. This year, the form that are sold for 28 thousand sheets with details of 10,500 IPA, and 10 thousand IPS 7500 IPC. Decrease in the number of this form is adapted with a decrease returning form SNMPTN in 2008.

That time, the form sold as many as 30,500 forms with details of 10,500 IPA, IPS 12 thousand, and the 8000 IPC.

Jakarta’s University of Indonesia (UI), Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) have maintained their standard to be awarded a place on Asia’s top 100 higher education institutions list.

The Times Higher Education’s first-ever Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings,
released Tuesday, placed UI at 50th place, UGM at 63rd and ITB at 80th.

Hong Kong, Japanese and South Korean universities dominated the QS’ premier regional rankings, with the National University of Singapore the only Southeast Asian university to break into the top 10.

Other Southeast Asian universities included in the big 50 list are Nanyang Technological University at 14th place, Thailand’s Mahidol University at 30th place, Chulalongkorn University at 35th place and Malaysia’s University Malaya at 39th place.

UI has retained its position as Indonesia’s best performer, having ranked 287th on the THE-QS 2008 World University Rankings. This year however, UGM and ITB swapped positions.

“Indonesian universities have performed well, with high peer and recruiter review scores. These results make study in Indonesia an attractive option for international students studying abroad,” QS managing director Nunzio Quacquarelli said in a statement.

Director General for Higher Education Fasli Jalal said considering Asia is home to more than 4000 universities and other higher education institutions, the rankings achieved by Indonesia’s top three universities were very commendable.

UI rector Gumilar Rusmiwa Sumantri said earlier that UI’s constant improvement was due to internal reforms such as efficient financial management, greater efforts to produce international journals and promoting the university as a destination for study to international students.

Similar measures have likewise been adopted by the ITB, whose rector Djoko Santoso said it
had been enjoying an increasing number of foreign students in the past few years.

UI ranks best among Indonesian universities in Social Sciences, sitting on 18th place, while UGM is listed as 14th for Art and Humanities. UGM also performed well in Life Sciences and Medicine, securing 16th place.

ITB is Indonesia’s best performer in Engineering and Information Technology, ranking 21st while taking out 27th place for Natural Science.

The complete rankings can be viewed at www.topuniversities.com.

It measures academic peer review, recruiter review, student to faculty ratio, papers per faculty, citations per paper, international faculty review, international students review and student exchanges inbound and outbound.
