Lee Schweichler, SPMB (Schweichler Price Mullarkey & Barry) Founder/Partner has been engaged in senior level executive search and selection for over 35 years. He has recently been engaged in the recruitment and selection at the President/CEO and Vice President levels for companies in software, security, storage, mobile, data center technology, networking, e-commerce, digital media, renewable energy and semiconductors.
Lee has completed some of the most successful CEO searches in the Bay Area technology community, including John Morgridge at Cisco (and then identified John Chambers as #2 executive at Cisco), Dan Warmenhoven at Network Appliance, Frank slootman at Data Domain, Dennis Barsema at Redback Networks, and Steve DeWitt at Cobalt. These executives built their companies from early stage to industry leaders, IPO’d them, and grew market value measured at nearly $200 billion. Lee is very adept at identifying talent that goes beyond the resume. He focuses on character and passion in his candidate selection process, and it has paid off over the years.
In 1977, Lee founded the firm, defined the core operating philosophy which sets the firm apart from others, and has built the core team. SPMB has become the largest independent search firm serving the technology community.
Lee has an MBA in Organizational Behavior and Industrial Relations from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Sterne School in San Francisco, a school for children with learning differences. He is recognized in Career Makers, North America’s Top Executive Recruiters. Lee is married, has three daughters, three super grand-children, and resides in San Rafael, California.
What are you passionate about?
My family – wife, daughters, sons-in-law and three incredible grand-kids. Nothing better in life than one’s family.
My business – starting and growing a business has been a real driving force in my life. I want SPMB to be the absolute best at what we do. Top level executive search consulting — finding and bringing to our clients the top talent – is the only acceptable end product.
Snow skiing and the water – sailing and boating
Where have you traveled and where would you like to go?
Southeast Asia, New Zealand, throughout Europe, parts of the mid-east, Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu. Viet Nam was fabulous, New Zealand, exceptional. Puglia region in Italy a surprising treat (who would suspect?). Next major adventure TBD…China, India, Japan, Antarctica?
What is the hardest thing you have ever done?
As any parent might say…raising children. Happily that worked out well. Day-in, day-out it was the years it took to build this business, particularly at a time when the optimal model of how to succeed and grow was not clear. We had to figure things out as we went. A lot of smart and committed people were involved in getting us where we are today.
Who would you like to trade places with for a month?
In reality no one person, but I would like to be the proverbial “fly on the wall” in critical White House policy decision making, or in an F-50 Board meeting when major strategies are being debated.
Which phrases would you use to describe yourself?
Totally committed. Self-reliant. Always concerned about quality and doing things right. Conscious of others. More comfortable being out of the spotlight.
