Steve joined SPMB in 2007 to launch the firm’s CFO Practice — now one of the most respected financial leadership search practices in the country. He has led more than 400 CFO searches for public companies and VC- and PE-backed businesses across software, fintech, biotech, consumer tech, and sustainability. His clients include top investment firms such as IVP, Accel, Sequoia Capital, Warburg Pincus, a16z, KPCB, and Spectrum Equity.
As Head of SPMB’s Financial Officers Practice, Steve partners with investors, boards, CEOs, and CHROs to place CFOs and their key lieutenants at the center of strategic and operational transformation. He consistently delivers access to the highest-impact financial leaders in the market. His network spans both proven financial stewards and next-gen talent—rising stars who are often not yet on clients’ radar but come recommended through trusted referrals. This unique access, and “network effect”, is core to Steve’s ability to surface talent others can’t yet see.
Steve also partners closely with boards to recruit Audit Committee members, bringing deep financial oversight and governance expertise to both public and pre-IPO companies.
Outside of work, Steve is a passionate road cyclist and overzealous mountain biker, music aficionado (jazz, classical, jam bands), avid birder, self-taught naturalist, and enthusiastic home chef. He’s a proud (and long-suffering) NY Mets and Knicks fan, father to three daughters, and a Mill Valley, CA resident.
Steve earned a B.S. with honors in Biology and Humanities from the State University of New York at Albany.

What’s the most non traditional job you’ve ever had?
I worked as a cold-calling door-to-door salesman in NYC, selling gourmet cheese and charcuterie to chefs at high-end restaurants. Toughest clients ever!
What sports star would you most like to meet?
Muhammad Ali. Hands down. My parents made my sisters and I aware of his heroism as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, even before we ever saw him in the ring. He’s always been a hero of mine.
Which band would you love to tour with?
I’m dating myself with this answer but… Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies or Led Zeppelin. Hard to say which of those bands had more fun on tour, but I’m certain that both of them did!
