Steve joined SPMB in 2007 from Howard Fischer Associates and has since become an integral part of the firm’s leadership team. The same year he joined SPMB, Steve founded its CFO Practice which recruits accomplished, company-shaping financial executives to public, VC-backed, and PE-funded companies in software, fintech, biotech, consumer technology, and sustainability. Since inception, the CFO Practice has completed over 350 searches across all segments. Steve’s clients include the portfolio companies of IVP, Accel Partners, Sequoia Capital, Warburg Pincus, a16z, Spectrum Equity, KPCB, and many more. 2024 marks Steve’s 31st year in the executive search industry.
Outside of the office, Steve is an avid road cyclist and overzealous mountain biker, music lover (with a particular affinity for jazz, classical, and various jam bands), birder, self-proclaimed naturalist, and enthusiastic homechef. In his wayward youth he lived on a classic sailboat in the Caribbean for 2.5 years. Steve is a devoted NY Mets fan, but it’s not his fault. He has 3 teenage daughters, and lives in Mill Valley, CA.
Steve holds a B.S. degree with honors in Biology and Humanities from the State University of New York at Albany.

What’s the most non traditional job you’ve ever had?
I worked as a cold-calling door-to-door salesman in NYC, selling gourmet cheese and charcuterie to chefs at high-end restaurants. Toughest clients ever!
What sports star would you most like to meet?
Muhammad Ali. Hands down. My parents made my sisters and I aware of his heroism as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, even before we ever saw him in the ring. He’s always been a hero of mine.
Which band would you love to tour with?
I’m dating myself with this answer but… Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies or Led Zeppelin. Hard to say which of those bands had more fun on tour, but I’m certain that both of them did!
